Donald Anthony “Donnie” Masztak, age 84, of Luna Pier, Michigan passed away on Sunday, July 25, 2021 at the Toledo Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 6, 1937 in Toledo, Ohio to Zykfryt “Ziggie” and Helen (Synowczyk) Masztak. Donnie was a graduate of Macomber High School and the University of Toledo. After completing his service in the US Marine Corps, he began his working career at Schultz Die. A talented athlete, he eventually went on to a career as a high school coach and athletic director. Donnie was the Athletic Director and Golf Coach at Cardinal Stritch High School, the Athletic Director at Northwood High School, and from 1986-2000 the Athletic Director and Girls’ Basketball Coach at St. Ursula Academy where he was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame. He was a sports reporter for the former “Sports Beat” newspaper, and from 1963-1985, a detective for the Toledo Police Auto Theft Division.
Donnie was a life member and past Commandant of the Lou Diamond Detachment as well as a member of their Military Order of the Devil Dogs, a life member of both the Marine Corps League and the 3rd Marine Division, and a member of CWV Post 639. He was also a member of the North Cape Yacht Club and a longtime parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
Donnie is survived by his loving wife of almost 40 years, Marie (Archambeault) Masztak (married July 31, 1981); children, Dean (Laura) Masztak, Denice (John Thomas) Masztak, Deena Masztak, Jack (Kris) Shade, Steve Shade, Tommy Masztak, and Michelle Masztak; grandchildren, Rachel (Nick Bellore), Benjamin, Nicholas, Jennifer, Sarah, Noah, Adam, Sam, Grace, Brian, Brandon, and Hudson; great-grandson, Luke (Ziggy) Bellore; and sister, Susan Masztak. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be Friday, July 30 from 2-8 p.m. at Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m., followed by a service led by members of the Military Order of the Devil Dogs. Funeral services will begin Saturday at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral home and continue with the Funeral Mass in St. John the Baptist Church at 10 a.m. The VFW 606 Burial Corps will conclude with Military Honors in Calvary Cemetery.
