Obituary

Edward L. “Ed” Hassen, age 96, of Temperance, MI passed away peacefully at home on Friday, March 17, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 9, 1926 in Swanton, OH to Louis Edward and Loretta (Meiring) Hassen. Ed was a graduate of Swanton High School. He was a Veteran of the US Navy on the USS Upham and a member of the VFW George Rill Post 606 and the American Legion Sherman Osborn Post 192. A highly skilled mechanic and handyman, he began his working career at Kaiser Jeep, was a long-distance truck driver for W.M. Tynan trucking, a mechanic for Shankland’s Truck Stop, co-owner and operator of Hassen’s Gulf Gas Station on Telegraph Rd. along with his cousin Bill Hassen, and finished his career as a heavy equipment operator for Gradel Inc. Ed was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and family man. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid card player. He was a former parishioner of Little Flower Catholic Church.

Ed is survived by his wife, Katherine (Bius) Hassen; children, Edward John (Dee-Dee) Hassen and Sandra K. Hassen; grandchildren, Desiree Sikorski-Henning, Edward Sean Hassen, and Donovan Hassen; and 4 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are in-laws, Vern (Chris) Bius and Jim (Kay) Bius; “bonus kids”, Dave and Karen Gordon; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hassen; son, Michael Edward Hassen; sister, Elizabeth Mowery; and cousin whom he loved like his own brother, Bill Hassen.

Visitation will be Friday, March 24 from 2-7 p.m. at Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd., Toledo. The funeral service will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Deacon James Dudley presiding. Interment with Military Honors led by the VFW 606 Honor Guard will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
