Gregory Jude “Greg” Berning Sr., aka “the Undertaker”, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2023 at ProMedica Flower Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 9, 1964 in Toledo, OH to Frederick and Julia (Wolinski) Berning. Greg was a proud graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School Class of 1983. He was a field surveyor for FWB, Inc for 40 years, a limousine driver for 20 years with Childers Transportation, and the equipment manager for the St. Francis De Sales High School football team, the Ohio Cannon football team, the Toledo Storm hockey team, the Toledo Thunder football team, and the Cleveland Browns. A resident of the Old West End, Greg was Innkeeper of the Scottwood Inn for 3 years, and a regular volunteer at the annual Old West End Festival and annual German American Festival. He was an enthusiastic parishioner of Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral and very proud of his extensive volunteer work with the “Toledo YES Project” and throughout the Diocese of Toledo. A “Greg of all trades”, he could always be counted on to take on the jobs no one else wanted. He loved entertaining friends and family and was the “life of the party” wherever he went. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
Greg is survived by his children, Gregory (Bailey) Berning Jr., Franklin (Kileigh) Berning, Thaddeus (Kallie) Berning, and Samantha Berning; and his grandson, Isaiah Johnson. Also surviving are his father, Frederick Berning Sr., his sisters, Audrey Berning-Matell, Helen (Roger) Davis, Diane (Tom) Haupricht, Juliette (Daniel) Schaefer, and Louise (Mike) Maxwell; his brothers, Frederick Jr., Michael, and Eric (Jennifer) Berning; and the mother of his children. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews. He has now joined his mother, Julia, in heaven.
