Helen Marie Lis

Helen M. Lis fell asleep in the Lord on January 28, 2024 at the age of 100 years and 3 months as a result of a very brief illness. She is the second of four children born to Peter Olszewski and Lottie Przybyrowska on October 20, 1923, and was a lifelong member of St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Helen attended the old Webster Elementary School for eight years, then Whitney Vocational High School graduating in 1941. Her educational focus was Secretarial Sciences, although her dream was to become a teacher. Due to the economic privation caused by the Great Depression of 1929, her family was not able to afford a college education, and so Helen’s first job was to be the secretary to a Mr. Gruber, a salesman selling Formica. In 1948 Helen married Stanley J. Lis at St. Adalbert Church. They had two sons, the Very Reverend David J. Lis, born in 1950, and her second son, Dennis Lis, born in 1952. Once her boys were in grade school, Helen returned to full-time work in Medical Records at Mercy hospital in Toledo. She eventually moved up to Assistant Administrator of the department, retiring after 38 years of service.

Helen enjoyed baking, cooking, traveling, and shopping with her younger sister, Elsie. In retirement the two of them would head out for the day visiting stores and enjoying lunch together. Helen lived for 80 years in Toledo, and after the passing of her brother, Daniel Olszewski, she with her sister moved to Oregon, OH in 2003 and lived there until her passing.

Helen is survived by her two sons, and was predeceased by brothers Casimir and Daniel, her sister, Elsie Olszewski, and her ex-husband Stanley Lis.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd. with the Vigil beginning on Thursday, February 1 with calling hours from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and a Panchida on Friday at 5 p.m.  The Funeral Mass at St. Adalbert Church, 3233 LaGrange St. will be on Saturday, February 3 at 10:00 a.m.  Father Daniel Ring will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
