John H. Achinger, 82, lost his battle with a brief illness on August 11, 2025. He will be missed tremendously by his wife, Peggi; children, Buzz Achinger (Kim), Tammy Martin (Scott) and Nicole Achinger (Dennis); stepchildren, Matthew Clark and Andrea Clark (Mark); his grandchildren, Danielle Achinger, Chelsea Gautz (Mike), Joshua Achinger (Lauren), Taylor Achinger (Mohammed), Noah Achinger (Keagann), Sophie Achinger, Nicholas Martin (Ashley), Zachary Martin, Jake Martin (Olivia), Olivia Martin, Morgan Sterger (Nick), Abigail Murphy (Jarret), Dennis Murphy III; 9 great-grandchildren that he adored; and his beloved dog, Jackson – he always loved his dogs the most.
He was born in Toledo, OH on October 20, 1942, to William and Marion (Jones) Achinger. John served honorably in the United States Army after high school and then worked at General Motors Corporation for over 40 years. After retirement he worked part time for Signature Bank as a courier for many years. He was a long-time member of Ottawa River Yacht Club, serving as Commodore in 1995. He loved maritime and watercraft history and had been the club’s historian for the last several years. He held a USCG Captain’s License and referred to himself as “Captain John”, one of the many nicknames he had given himself over the years. He was a member of the Great Lakes Past Commodores Association and enjoyed volunteering at their many events. He held a black belt in karate, loved weightlifting, boating, golfing, traveling, and was an avid Buckeye fan and Corvette enthusiast.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Marion Achinger; his first wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Achinger; his son, Jeffrey Achinger; his sister, Joan Dietsch; and his brother, William Achinger.
We will miss his wit, wisdom, patience and all the guidance he has given us. He was truly one of a kind.
Family and friends may gather at Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 East Alexis Road, Toledo, OH on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Great Lakes Historical Society.
