Joseph Louis Gillen, age 78, of Toledo passed away at home on Thursday, February 22. He was born on August 31, 1945 in Delta, OH to Cletus and Grace (Deitrick) Gillen. Joe was a graduate of Fulton Local High School. A decorated Veteran of the US Air Force, he served in Germany as a systems mechanic for 4 years. He was the owner and operator of Signs & Such on Douglas Rd. in Toledo, where he worked alongside his wife Nancy for 46 years. An avid golfer, he golfed with the Adams Township golf league. He was also an active member of the American Legion Adams Township Post 553.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Nancy (Conlan) Gillen; son, Michael Gillen; sisters, Barbara (David) Vrooman and Sue Ann (Mark) Moser; brothers, Daniel (Mary), Roger, Gene (Sue), Tom, Roy (Connie), Timothy, Mark (Janet), and Jeffrey (Cindy) Gillen; 24 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Scott J. Gillen.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 27 from 3-7 p.m. at Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd. with a service led by American Legion 553 at 6:30 p.m. The funeral service will be Wednesday, February 28 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Joshua Ramos presiding. Members of American Legion Post 553 will conclude with Military Honors at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be given to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Condolences can be shared, and the funeral service will be livestreamed at www.sujkowski.com.
