Mary Lou Mata, age 73, passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at the Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 21, 1948 in Toledo, OH to Higinio and Anita (Garcia) Covarrubias. After graduating from Waite High School, Mary opened a Home Day Care, caring for many community children for eighteen years. She also worked as head cook and luncheon lady for St. Hedwig and St. Adalbert Catholic Schools for ten years, retiring in 2010. A talented seamstress, Mary enjoyed sewing costumes for her children and their performances with the dance group, “Recuerdos De Mi Tierra”. She was also a wonderful cook known for her delicious tamales and other Mexican dishes. She was a parishioner of Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a former member of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Hedwig, and Good Shepherd Catholic Churches.
Mary is survived by her husband of 55 years, Gumersindo “Guma” Mata; daughter, Estella (Walter Jr.) Nino; sons, Antonio (Nellie) Mata Sr. and Mario Mata; sisters, Dolores (Jose) Mata and Teresa (Amir) Abrishami; brothers, John (Desi), Patricio (Sandy), Higinio (Linda) and Arturo (Alesia) Covarrubias with whom she had a special relationship; sisters-in-law, Lillian and Rose Covarrubias; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Miguel and Felipe Covarrubias.
Visitation will be Tuesday, October 18 from 2-8 p.m. in Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd. with praying of the rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral services will begin Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. in the funeral home and continue with the Funeral Mass in Most Blessed Sacrament Church at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park.
