Melvin Richard Flayter, age 85, of Toledo’s Point Place Community, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, December 14, 2021. He was born November 15, 1936 in Milwaukee, WI to Florian and Harriet “Molly” (Piotrowski) Flayter. Melvin was a Veteran of the US Navy serving as Chief Petty Officer and Signalman on the U.S.S. Sierra. He worked for the Jeep Corporation for 33 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1994. He was a longtime parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and a member of the Riverview Yacht Club. Melvin loved being on the lake, fishing, and working in his yard. He was a big fan of the Green Bay Packers. An avid traveler, he was able to visit most of the 50 States and numerous islands as well as many countries in Europe.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edith (Rawlins) Flayter; son, Randall Flayter; and stepson, Joseph Middaugh. He is survived by his daughter, Rochelle Flayter; stepdaughter, Michelle (Tim) Langschied; stepsons, Jeffery (Julieta) Middaugh, David Middaugh, and Michael (Maggie) Middaugh; 27 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Susan (Tom) Michalski, Janice Clark, and Linda Nordin.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 19 from 4-8 p.m. at Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd. with a scripture service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will begin Monday at 10:15 a.m. in the funeral home and continue with the Funeral Mass in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at 11 a.m. The VFW 606 Burial Corps will conclude with Military Honors at the church. Inurnment will be at a later date in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
