Raymond Ortyl Obituary

Raymond Vincent Ortyl, 86, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home, Saturday, July 4, 2026. He was born on February 29, 1940 in Manhattan, NY to John and Sophia (Giermanski) Ortyl. In 1942, Raymond along with his parents came to Toledo, where they made their home in the Polish Village area. During his early schooling, he attended the St. Adalbert Catholic grade school where he discovered his artistic talent. While he was a student at Woodward High School, art became one of his passions to a point where during his senior year in 1958 he was asked to paint the four original polar bears that were exhibited in the school’s gymnasium.

Raymond earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Ohio University. Upon graduation, he became a “walking encyclopedia” for his knowledge in geography and history which was his passion. Raymond became a wonderful educator, starting his teaching career at Scott High School where he taught for 20 years. He then continued for another 10 years at his alma mater, Woodward High School. After retirement, he worked at Home Depot where he enjoyed helping customers and building relationships with his coworkers.

Raymond had many hobbies, which included wood working, playing chess, listening to Polish music, playing the accordion, and supporting the Echoes of Poland dance group. He was a proud member of the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America aka PRCUA.

Raymond’s survivors include his wife of 58 years, Paulina Tul Ortyl of Toledo; son, Waldemar (Bogusia) Ortyl of Sterling Heights, MI; daughter, Mariola (Bryan) Cuffe of Stephens City, VA; brothers, John Jr. of Point Place, James Ortyl of Perrysburg, and Thomas Ortyl of West Palm Beach, FL; grandchildren, Monica (Randy) Putterbaugh of Toledo, Allyson (Andrew) Shea of Mary Ester, FL, Elizabeth Doran of Nashville, TN, and Justin Ortyl of Sterling Heights, MI;  great-grandchildren, Levi, Layla, Samuel, and Caleb; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Sophia Ortyl; his sisters-in-law, Sheron Ortyl and Joy Ortyl; and his nephew, Timothy Ortyl.

Visitation will be Sunday, July 12 from 3-8 p.m. at Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd., Toledo, OH 43612. The funeral service will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Deacon James Dudley presiding.
