Richard Hofmeister Obituary

Richard Hofmeister, age 88, of Toledo passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio’s Toledo campus surrounded by his loving family.  He was born on October 27, 1935 in Toledo, OH to Max and Anna (Aigner) Hofmeister. Richard and his brothers grew up on the corner of Woodward and Brigham in a wonderful community where he forged life-long relationships. His parents passed early in life, leaving cousins and friends, especially the Gerhardingers to surround Richard and his brothers with love and support.

When Richard came of age he began his working career.  He spent a short time in the U.S. Army reserves in Fort Knox before returning to Toledo, ultimately working as a foreman for Libbey Owens Ford/Pilkington for 43 years, retiring in 1997.

Richard married Martha Weislmeier in 1959.  Together they lovingly made a home on Waybridge and raised 3 children. There were many years filled with family road trips. Richard showed his children the country, allowing them to enjoy National Parks, many States, amusement parks, Holiday Inn pools, and buffet meals.  In 1978, he lost both Martha and his beautiful daughter, Julie.

Richard remarried in 1980 to Barb Markiecki (Slacek), who had three children of her own. They started a life of cruises and bus trips – probably because he discovered they had buffets too, especially the dessert versions. Richard crossed the equator and arctic circles, visited 5 continents, and went to many countries, oceans, and seas.

Richard was a dedicated hard worker with a passion for travel. He loved family time and sharing his latest reading of National Geographic or travel magazine, usually having made his next destination plans. The time spent in casinos was often part of bus trips with Barb, Bob, Sue, Al & Linda. Frequent short trips into MI and sometimes longer ventures to the gulf coast or Northeast were on the itinerary too.

Richard was a parishioner and avid volunteer at Regina Coeli Catholic Church.  He helped the finance team for many parish festivals, and donated time during funeral luncheons and celebrations of life. He was president of his HOA for many years, and with other neighbors, gave time to the beautification of the neighborhood. One loving life lived, Richard gave of himself to his brothers, spouses, children, and community.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara; first wife, Martha Weislmeier; daughter, Julie Ann Hofmeister; stepdaughter, Michelle Szczur; and brother Max Hofmeister.  He is survived by his daughter, Sandra (Gary) Phillips; son, Steven (Joanie) Hofmeister; stepdaughter, Kim Markiecki; stepson, Scott Markiecki; son-in-law, Martin Szczur; grandchildren, Melissa (Corey Lay) Bowers, Jonny Hofmeister, Max Hofmeister, Britnye (Dan) Peake, Alyssa (Brett) Gruden, Taylor Markiecki, Seth Markiecki, Nick Szczur, and Ashley Szczur; 9 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Robert (Sue) and Albert (Linda) Hofmeister.
