Richard "Dick" Granata Obituary

Richard “Dick” James Granata, age 89, of Toledo, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at the Franciscan Care Center surrounded by his loving family. A devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather, he was a hardworking, humble, and good man. He was the consummate joke-teller, and a constant presence at all his kids’ and grandkids’ sports and activities.

He was born on November 17, 1934, in Toledo, OH to Joseph and Eleanor (Hertzfeld) Granata. Dick was a 1952 graduate of Central Catholic High School and a Veteran of the US Air Force. His banking career spanned 30 years, starting at Ohio Citizens Bank, then on to Sylvania Savings Bank (now Key Bank). He then moved into the restaurant business where he and Sue were the owners and operators of Charlie’s Waffle House in Point Place for a short while, and then he became the manager of the “Schoolhouse Lunchroom” in the Schoolhouse Commons in Lambertville. He retired, (for about 2 weeks), and then went on to work part-time at Gordon Food Service for 13 years, finally retiring from there in 2010. As a side job over the years, Dick was a dedicated and meticulous wedding photographer. He was a long-time parishioner of Regina Coeli Catholic Church.

Dick was blessed with a beautiful singing voice and was a life-long Barbershopper. He sang with the Seaway Commanders chorus and numerous quartets throughout his life. His favorites were the “Brothers 3 and Me” and “Dads and Lads”, where he sang with his brothers and sons, respectively.

Dick is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Susan (Guzdanski) Granata; sons, Rich (Carolyn), Steve (Misti), and Jonathan (Heather) Granata; daughter, Amy (Brian) Lenihan; grandchildren, Mackenzie (Curtis) Scott, Maggie Granata, Ellie Lenihan, Molly Lenihan, Will Lenihan, and Natasha (Robert) Lopez; great-grandson, Colton; brother, David (Karen) Granata; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charles, Joseph, Tom, and Francis Granata; and sister, Eleanor Turner.

The Funeral Mass, celebrating Dick’s life, will be Saturday, March 2 at Regina Coeli Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m., preceded by visitation at the church from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. The VFW 606 Burial Corps will conclude with Military Honors at the church.
