Sophia Mikolajczyk

Sophia Mikolajczyk, age 84, of Maumee, OH passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at the Genoa Care Center surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 14, 1939 in Rochmanow, Poland to Jozef and Veronica (Kaszubinski) Poplawski. Sophia was a graduate of Calvert High School in Tiffin, OH. She worked for the Craftmaster Corporation, and in food service with the Toledo Public School System, having served as “Lunch Lady” at Arlington Elementary School for 10 years. She retired in 1996.

Sophia was proud of her Polish Heritage. She was an original member of the Echoes of Poland dance troupe in Toledo. A talented seamstress, she designed and sewed many of their colorful costumes over the years. She was also a terrific cook, known for her Polish dishes including Kruschiki, or “Angel Wings”. Sophia loved gathering with family and friends, was an avid Pinochle player, and loved putting together jigsaw puzzles. She was a longtime parishioner of the former St. Jude Catholic Church.

Sophia is survived by her daughters, Laura Maynard, Diane (Mike) Spina, Paula (Toby) Timmons, and Mary Brumm; 9 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters, Anna Wasylkowski and Elizabeth Tonkel; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence “Larry” Mikolajczyk; son, Jeffrey Mikolajczyk; brother, Edmund Poplawski; sister, Bernice Czubachowski; and grandchildren, Kelly and Brittany Maynard.

Visitation will be Wednesday, August 28 from 4-8 p.m. at Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd.  The funeral service will be Thursday, August 29 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Deacon James Dudley presiding. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
