Sylvester S. Kosinski, age 93, of the Point Place Community in Toledo, passed away on Monday, May 6, 2024, in the comfort of his home surrounded by family. He was born on January 16, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio to Stanley and Constance (Gusta Kremnitz) Kosinski. Sylvester was a graduate of Woodward High School “Class of 1949”, and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. He worked for General Motors for 31 years in tool & die follow-up.
A longtime parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He also was a 4th Degree Knight with the Bishop Hoffman Toledo Assembly #807, and an active member of the Knights of Columbus St. Lawrence Council, having held every office over the years including Grand Knight and District Deputy. Other memberships included the 55+ Club at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, the GM Salaried Retirees, and The Toledo Polish Genealogical Society.
Syl will be joyfully reunited with Joanne, his wife of 59 years. In addition to their dedication to church and family, they nurtured several life-long friendships. Over the years, be it together or with friends, they enjoyed traveling, cruises, casino trips, and spent many winter months in Florida. Both were talented in the kitchen and garden and could be seen volunteering at church and club events.
Taking pride in his Polish heritage, Syl became an avid reader and researcher; he particularly focused many hours on the people and life in the former Lagrange Street Polish Village area. He became a historian, a storyteller, and was a driving force in developing an outstanding library of genealogical information house in the Toledo Polish Genealogical Society.
Sylvester is survived by his sons, Michael Kosinski and David Kosinski, LTC, U.S. Army (Ret.) & wife, Tina; grandchildren, Christopher, Catherine, and Daniel Kosinski; sister-in-law, Rita Wieczorek; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joanne (Brantmyler) Kosinski; sisters, Ferne Szymczak, Alice Truna, and Virginia Jeziorski; and brothers, Clemence, Edwin, Albin, Clarence, Stanley, and Leonard Kosinski.
The family would like to thank nieces Sandra Maugel and Janice Posadny, for their help in providing Sylvester’s special needs over the past few months. Also, the family is truly grateful to all his caregivers, especially Greg, and the team from Kind Hearts Hospice.
Visitation will take place from 4 – 8 p.m. on Monday, May 20, at Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd. where members of the Bishop Hoffman Toledo Assembly #807 will lead a Chalice Service at 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 5153 N.
