Walter Robert Zale, age 94, of Toledo, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2025 at the Otterbein Sunset House surrounded by his loving family. Walter was born on October 7, 1930 in Toledo, OH to Robert and Helen (Kaczmarek) Zalezynski. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he served as a policeman for the City of Toledo for 32 years, retiring in June of 1987. Walter was a member of the American Legion Police Post 512, the Fraternal Order of Police Post 40, the Toledo Police Command Officers Association, and the Toledo Police Retirees Association. He was also president of the Blessed Sacrament Seniors Group, where he also served as a Eucharistic Minister. Walter enjoyed golfing, gardening, fishing, traveling with his wife, and spending time with family and friends.
Walter is survived by his wife, Joan, whom he married on April 7, 1951. Also surviving are his son, Timothy J. (Janet) Zale, Oregon, OH: daughters, Patricia A. (Michael) Filichia, Worthington, OH, Mary H. (Ronald) Boone, Dayton, ME; 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Zalezynski; sisters, Frances Zalezynski, Helen McDonald, Mary Peters, and Margaret Shoup.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2240 Castlewood Drive, in Toledo, OH, on Friday, July 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior in the church narthex. Walter will be laid to rest at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park with military funeral honors. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Blessed Sacrament Church.
